Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book: Top Ten Tuesday

I’ve been thinking of doing Top Ten Tuesday for a while now, but I could never come up with ten points. However, I definitely have things that make me want to read a book, and I knew that I could get ten things. Read on for my answers to this Tuesday’s prompt!

An amazing cover

I’m also not immune to a gorgeous cover. There’s just something about seeing a beautiful cover that makes me way more interested in the story. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Interesting type of paper, foil design and other book finishes

I work in the book production department of a publishing house, and I deal a lot with book finishes, such as spray block, foiling, and spot UV.

A great blurb

A book needs to have a good blurb, but not one that tells me too much of the story. Just enough to pique my interest.

Standalone or a series books that is complete in itself

Lately, I’ve been wanting for books that are complete stories, even if they are part of a series. I just don’t like the idea of having to wait for the resolution in another book, ESPECIALLY if I have to wait over a year for that book. I’ve written about this on Thoughts On: Series vs Standalones.

Dancing and music themes

While books take up a large amount of my life, I do also enjoy dancing and playing music (i.e. the recorder, the tin whistle, and the flute). Books that have these themes in them immediately jump to the top of my list! Do you know of any such books? I’m always looking for recommendations!

Multiracial characters

I am multiracial, and it just means so much to me, if there multiracial characters in books. It’s amazing to read about my experiences in books.

Books set in Sri Lanka or Malaysia

Two of my home countries are Sri Lanka and Malaysia, and I love being able to read about stories set in these countries, as it gives me a connection to them.

Recommended by friends

My friends know what books I like, and I trust them. So if they’re going to say that something is good, I know that it pretty much will be.

I love fantasy. I love it so much. I’ve always enjoyed imagining myself to be in fantasy settings, and I love reading about different types of places.

If the book is too expensive, how am I going to afford it? I can’t.

Available as paperback

This is kinda in relation to the point on price. It annoys me when books aren’t available as paperbacks. Hardbacks are so much more expensive. Also, I like the feel of paperbacks and I find it easier to read them.

What are the top things that make you want to read a book?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish. It is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

      1. I’ve been recommended recently The Fault in Our Stars, One Word Kill, and The Priory of the Orange Tree. I haven’t got to them yet, but I hope to someday 🙃
